Harry Potter Card Game (ハリー・ポッター カードゲーム) is an official Japanese competitive trading card game based on the Harry Potter film series and its Wizarding World characters, spells, items, and locations. Released by Movic in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the game launched in Japan on April 25, 2026. Players select a Partner Card, build a 50-card deck, and use characters and magic inspired by memorable scenes from the films to duel their opponent.
The game’s first product wave focuses on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with booster cards featuring Hogwarts students, professors, magical objects, spells, locations, and events from the first film. Its launch lineup includes Gryffindor and Slytherin Starter Decks, booster packs, booster boxes, promotional cards, and official sleeves based on the four Hogwarts houses. Japanese booster packs have an official suggested retail price of ¥440, while the Starter Decks are officially priced at ¥990 each.
Popular Harry Potter Card Game product types
Explore the main Japanese Harry Potter Card Game products available for beginners, deck builders, sealed-product collectors, and Wizarding World fans:
-
Japanese Booster Packs: Each booster pack contains five randomly selected cards. Booster cards allow players to expand their decks with new characters, spells, items, locations, events, Partner Cards, and collectible parallel treatments.
-
Japanese Booster Boxes: A booster box for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Part.1 contains 12 packs. Boxes provide more cards for deck building and set collecting, although opening one box does not guarantee every card or a specific high-rarity version.
-
Gryffindor Starter Deck: A ready-to-play constructed deck based on Gryffindor characters and strategies. It contains 52 cards, a play sheet, and a marker sheet, with cards created specifically for the Starter Deck.
-
Slytherin Starter Deck: A separate 52-card constructed deck built around Slytherin themes and characters. It can be played immediately or upgraded with cards from the booster expansions.
-
Partner Cards: Each player begins with one Partner Card placed outside the 50-card Main Deck. The Partner represents the player’s companion throughout the duel and plays an important role in determining the game’s victory condition.
-
Character Cards: Characters enter the Main Field or Support Field to duel opponents and assist other cards. The card pool includes students, professors, magical beings, and other figures from the Harry Potter films.
-
Magic Cards: Single-use cards representing spells from the Wizarding World. Some magic is used directly by the player, while other spells can be performed through Character Cards.
-
Item Cards: Cards representing magical objects and equipment. Depending on the card, an item may be used once, equipped to a character, or placed in the Support Field.
-
Location Cards: Cards inspired by recognizable Wizarding World locations. They remain in the Support Field and provide effects that assist a player’s strategy.
-
Event Cards: Single-use cards based on important scenes and developments from the Harry Potter story. They provide immediate effects before being placed in the discard pile.
-
Promo Cards: Promotional releases are distributed through purchase campaigns, teaching sessions, shop tournaments, fan meetings, launch events, and selected Harry Potter retail locations in Japan.
-
Single Cards: Individual cards are useful for completing a deck, collecting a favorite character, or searching for a particular rarity, Partner Card, spell, or parallel design.
-
Official Card Sleeves: Movic has released official 65-sleeve packs featuring the Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff house crests.

Japanese vs English Harry Potter Card Game cards
As of July 23, 2026, Movic’s current Harry Potter Card Game has only been officially announced and released as a Japanese-language product. No English edition of this specific 2026 card game has been confirmed in the official product catalog.
-
Japanese Movic Edition: The current game launched in 2026 with Japanese card text, Japanese packaging, Partner Cards, a 50-card deck, an MP Card, and three starting Life cards.
-
Original Japanese Product Line: Japanese collectors can access the Gryffindor and Slytherin Starter Decks, Philosopher’s Stone boosters, official house sleeves, event promos, and Japan-based campaign cards.
-
No Confirmed English Edition: Buyers should not assume that an English-language version with identical cards, rules, or set numbering is currently available.
-
Different from the 2001 Wizards Game: The older Harry Potter Trading Card Game published by Wizards of the Coast is a separate, discontinued game with different rules, deck construction, card types, sets, and card backs.
-
No Cross-Game Compatibility: English Wizards of the Coast cards from the 2001 game cannot be used in decks for Movic’s 2026 Harry Potter Card Game.
-
Check Product Listings Carefully: A listing described simply as “English Harry Potter cards” may refer to the discontinued Wizards game, non-game collectible cards, or another licensed Harry Potter product rather than an English edition of the Movic TCG.
-
Japanese Reading Requirements: International players who cannot read Japanese may need the official rules, a card database, or translated reference material to understand card effects.
-
Japan-Market Promotions: Studio Tour Tokyo, Harry Potter Shop, Mahou Dokoro, TSUTAYA, and Japanese tournament promotions may offer cards or products unavailable through ordinary international retail channels.
-
Tournament Participation: Players outside Japan should confirm whether local organized-play support exists before purchasing cards primarily for competitive use.
Collectors looking for the active 2026 Harry Potter Card Game should choose the Japanese Movic edition rather than the older Wizards of the Coast cards. The Japanese version is currently the primary official option for fans who want the new gameplay system, original Japanese packaging, Philosopher’s Stone expansions, house-based Starter Decks, and Japan-distributed promotional cards.
